Unlock unique opportunities for your students in the dynamic realm of news media through student placements with Bylines Network. Explore the benefits of partnering with us to enhance your students’ future careers and develop their employability skills.

We are a group of ten online publications regulated by the independent press monitor, IMPRESS. We publish well-written, fact-based articles and opinion pieces that engage readers on topics of local and national significance. By amplifying community voices and holding those in power accountable, we are championing democracy.

Each of the Bylines is run by volunteers, and everyone who reads our work does so for free. Our teams are comprised of citizen journalists who are writers, videographers, podcasters and cartoonists. They are assisted by editors, website teams and social media content contributors, together with a central team that provides technical and other support. Between us, we exemplify democracy by giving voice to people in our communities.

Why choose the Bylines Network for student placements?

Our independence and progressive stance make us a unique platform for aspiring journalists. We are not aligned with any political parties, allowing your students to experience journalism that transcends party lines.

Remote working

All our volunteers work from home. This provides a unique degree of flexibility to students to fit in writing around their coursework.

During their time with us, students will be supported by both our Education Coordinator and our Student Placement Coordinator. We’ll help your students build a portfolio of work that will add significant weight to their CV.

Choice of roles

Students will have the opportunity to engage in a multitude of tasks, depending on their chosen role. Whilst most of our placements are writers, there are also opportunities to do podcasting or videography. We also take on anyone interested in learning about editing, uploading articles, publicising on social media.

Tech enthusiasts will gain valuable skills in website design (including WordPress) and management, image creation (including utilising AI), graphic design and general IT under the expert guidance of our operations manager.

Our experience

This is the third year of our student placement programme. We now partner with ten local universities. Across the network we have had approximately 100 young writers and have accommodated over 50 formal student placements to date. This vibrant network of students brings with it a great mix of energy and diversity.

To ensure your students’ work reaches a wide audience, we publicise our articles in a range of ways: via social media where we have over 200,000 followers across a variety of platforms, email subscriptions, a popular mobile app and a monthly gazette showcasing our best work. Since our launch, our articles across our websites, have had over eleven million reads.

Through our ‘Inclusive Bylines’ programme, aided by our diversity coordinator, your students will have the opportunity to help us champion diverse communities’ voices, fostering cross-community understanding and making a real impact.

Embark on a unique opportunity for your students to gain real-world experience, contribute to meaningful journalism, and make a lasting impact. Partner with us, and together, we’ll nurture the journalists of the future.
